FIRE 14 Exhibition & Special Events Update

Here’s an update on the Fire 14 exhibition and the special events planned in conjunction with it:
  • Saturday, May 29th , 10:30 a.m.: official opening of the exhibition at the Heritage Centre. Admission by donation. Everyone invited.
  • Saturday, May 29th , 5:30 p.m.: Fire 14 “themed” wind-up dinner at the Legion. Cost: $20/person. Tickets will be available at the Legion and the Heritage Centre and will be go on sale on Wednesday, March 24th. A special documentary DVD, entitled “Fire People” will premiere at the Legion event. It will feature interviews with local people who experienced Fire 14, as well as photos, historic video footage, and other archival material. DVDs will be available at $25/each. Contact the Heritage Centre to reserve your copy.
  • We are still looking for photos, stories and artifacts. We need pictures of fire fighters , as well as photos of the communities during the fire, such as people packing their belongings before the evacuation; reuniting with their pets when they returned, and so on. As well, we’d like pictures taken at the evacuation centres and/or in Winnipeg. We also desperately need “Red Lake Evacuee” t-shirts. We’ve seen many photos of children and adults wearing t-shirts that read “ Saved by Hercules” and “Red Lake Evacuee”.
  • The Fire 14 exhibit will be on display until September 2010, and the DVD will be shown and available for sale at the Heritage Centre throughout the summer.

This project is a collaborative between the Heritage Centre, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Red Lake Legion. If you have any questions about the above events, or suggestions for additional events or activities that could be done to mark this historic event, please contact the Heritage Centre. Thanks!

Help Red Lake Retain its Youth

The CCDC's Community Development Committee is in the process of creating youth retention initiatives and we are surveying youth.

The survey is for anyone between the ages of 15 and 40 who currently reside in Red Lake (or surrounding area) OR have lived in Red Lake at one time.

We have created this survey in order to get a better idea of why Red Lake's youth tend to migrate out of the community and, for those who decide to stay or return to Red Lake, what has kept them here or drawn them back.

The survey will only take you 5 minutes to do and is completely anonymous and confidential.
